A recent report by the Australian Mineral Board (MCA) showed that Australian engineers’ salaries are the highest in the world, 60% higher than the global average. Australian universities are struggling to meet the demand for engineering and geological skills created by the booming resource sector. Currently, 98 major projects are in the final stages of development in the mining, oil and gas and energy sectors. This activity places high pressure on the current engineering workforce.

Lack of skills, fueled by new projects

There is a demand for almost all engineering disciplines, ranging from senior mining and civil construction engineers to a marine engineer and pipe designer jobs. Given the continued need for Australian natural resources from new economies such as China, major infrastructure projects are underway in rail, port and public transportation projects to help produce more products.

Greenfields mining projects are under construction, as are LNG projects and other energy projects across the country. Western Australia and Queensland are suffering from a severe shortage of engineering skills and are considering temporary migration to fill the gaps. Engineers all over the world enjoy working on these new projects, some of which only come once in a career.

But Australia is also looking to hire young engineers hoping to permanently migrate to the “lucky country”. The Department of Immigration and Citizenship recently opened doors more widely than ever to engineering graduates by reviewing the requirements of 476 visas.

Any engineering graduate with an engineering degree is encouraged to explore 476 visas, designed to bring engineering graduates under the age of 31 to live and work in Australia for up to 18 months. Once in Australia, visa holders are advised to convert their visa into a permanent residence visa that allows them to say indefinitely. Postgraduate engineering jobs in Australia present many challenges and jobs not available in other countries.
